The Holy Spirit

“When anyone presents a grain offering . . .his offering shall be of fine flour, and he shall pour oil on it.”- Leviticus 2:1 NASB

For reasons the Israelites may not have understood, God made it clear that oil was to be central to every grain offering they made. In fact, the word “oil” is used nine separate times in the first sixteen verses of Leviticus 2. These Israelites may have thought oil was necessary for cooking or preparation. But what was even more important was that the oil was a symbol of the Holy Spirit. An indication of God’s presence and anointing.

Later, those connections were made more clear. We see this, for example, when Samuel anointed David to be king with “the horn of oil,” when “the Spirit of the LORD came upon David” (1 Samuel 16:13). Later, God would declare, “I have found David My servant; with My holy oil I have anointed him” (Psalm 89:20).

This anointing was central for the power and presence of God. This was part of the equipping given to Jesus’ disciples, who “were casting out many demons and were anointing with oil many sick people and healing them” (Mark 6:12-13). In the early church, elders were instructed to pay for the sick, “anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord” (James 5:14-15).

The message is still clear. We need the Spirit. With His anointing, our lives have power. With His anointing, we have God’s supernatural blessing and authority, and the things we do will make an impact impossible in the natural.

The Spirit is to be central to everything we do. We are to bathe each project with the Spirit. To pray in the Spirit constantly. To commit everything we do to the Spirit. To seek His guidance. To operate in the realm of the Spirit, realizing that He can transform and change us. He can empower and equip us.

Prayer: Holy Spirit, help me to be sensitive to Your presence in my life. Lead me. Guide me. Fill me with Your power. Use me to impact lives. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
