The Hand of God

The first time we see Ezra in the Bible, it was established that he was a direct descendant of Aaron. Then, the focus shifts to his personal history and character. The key fact was that “Ezra had set his heart to study the Law of the Lord, and to do it and to teach his statutes and rules in Israel” (v. 10). More than just a scribe, he was “skilled in the Law of Moses.”

His study filled him with insights about God’s plans and purposes. Confident in Him, Ezra demonstrated a compassion for His people, teaching the insights and principles he had learned. He also was a man of action, not just thinking about what he had learned, but doing what he felt God wanted.

Ezra understood political realities and the importance of official actions and historical records. Inspired by these concerns, he approached the king, who “granted him all that he asked” writing a personal letter, filled with details.

There might have been many contributing factors for the favor Ezra received from the king, but the central reason was that God’s hand was on him. As was confirmed after he arrived in Jerusalem, “the good hand of his God was on him.”

This proved that Ezra was in tune with God. He was not being emotional but genuinely was inspired by Him. He was shrewd and discerning, but the foundation of his success was his relationship with God.

Today, seek to follow the model Ezra provides. Saturate your mind with God’s Word. Study it prayerfully and carefully, sensitive to His Spirit, ready to respond to the burdens He gives. Commit yourself to serve Him. Doing things in the right way, guided by Him.
