The Flesh or the Spirit?

How easy it can be to depend on ourselves. We can focus on our own thoughts, resources, or abilities. But the Bible tells us that nothing we do in the flesh (our own human strength) is pleasing to God—not our talents or abilities, our accomplishments or skills. Nothing! This is true whether we are kings or paupers, young or old.

How this realization should change our lives! We perpetually must remain humble before God, recognizing how much we need Him. As Paul reminded the Romans, “Don’t think highly of yourself, but fear what could happen” (Romans 11:20).

We never have a cause to be haughty in God’s sight. It doesn’t matter if we act spiritual or try to impress others. We may achieve worldly fame and fortune. We may win awards or gain recognition. We may be popular and seem to be happy.

But none of these things mean that we’re pleasing God. The Bible tells us that we are to live in the power of the Spirit instead of our flesh. Paul taught the Romans, “You are not controlled by your sinful nature. You are controlled by the Spirit if you have the Spirit of God living in you” (v. 9).

This means that the very Spirit of God is within us! He is like the wind that “blows wherever it wants” (John 3:8). He cannot be boxed into labels, corners, or patterns, nor is He limited by human understanding. Every day, we must seek to be sensitive to the Spirit, to operate with the gifts of the Spirit, and to bear the fruit of the Spirit.

Today, humble yourself before God. Thank Him for the gifts and resources He has given you and for the ways He has blessed you. Trust in God, and never put your trust in the things of the flesh. Walk in the power of the Holy Spirit!
