The Favor of the Lord

Joseph faced a series of seemingly hopeless situations. A foreigner in Egypt, with no family or friends, he had no money or possessions. As a slave, he effectively managed the household of his master until he was falsely accused and jailed.

In prison he continued to show remarkable organizational skills. But even there he seemed forgotten. Though he could have, he didn’t give in to hopelessness. Miraculously, he went directly from being a prisoner to becoming a ruler of Egypt, prosperous and “a successful man.”

What were the keys to Joseph’s success? How did he prosper in seemingly hopeless circumstances? “The Lord was with him.” In fact, the Bible says, “Whatever he did, the Lord made to prosper.” God “gave him favor.” His blessing was on everything Joseph touched, and everyone in whose life he was involved.

Joseph demonstrated the impact of having God’s favor. His favor opens the doors that seem to be shut. His favor can lead to blessings, even when blessing doesn’t seem possible. His favor makes miraculous things possible.

The Bible provides other examples of God’s favor. When the world was filled with violence, “Noah found favor in the eyes of the Lord” (Genesis 6:8). At a time when the Israelites were slaves in Egypt, God promised to grant them favor (Exodus 3:21). Even as a boy, Samuel experienced God’s favor (1 Samuel 2:26). Jesus Himself increased “in favor with God and men” (Luke 2:52).

In your life, remember the importance of seeking God’s favor in every situation. Trust Him. Serve Him faithfully. And believe Him for favor.
