The Deep Things of Satan

John was given a special revelation for the church in Thyatira. While continuing with their “love and faith and service and perseverance,” they were warned about ways they needed to change.

In particular, they were warned that they “tolerate the woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess, and she teaches and leads My bond-servants astray so that they commit acts of immorality and eat things sacrificed to idols.” Some even had “known the deep things of Satan.” The Greek word here describes things that are mysterious and profound.

In a similar way, the Bible frequently mentions that it is filled with mysteries. We are told, for example how God’s “thoughts are very deep” (Psalm 82:5). But here we discover that “deep things” can also be associated with Satan.

The Bible, in fact, tells us that Satan is devious and subtle. He tries to take advantage of us with “his schemes” (2 Corinthians 2:11). He can appear to be harmless and reasonable, and even “disguises himself as an angel of light” (2 Corinthians 11:14). Yet he is a liar and the father of lies (John 8:44).

Because of his devious character, Satan can trap us into drawing the wrong conclusions. While appearing to deliver a positive, harmless, and even uplifting message, he actually can be spreading chaos, destruction, and death.

Today, remember these truths about Satan and his kingdom. Be on guard for the subtle ways in which he can attack you and your loved ones. Be alert to the lies he might spread about God, His Kingdom, and His Word. Remain armed and ready for attacks and deceptive messages conceived from the depths of hell.
