The Coming of the Lord

Daniel Whittle knew what it was like to face war and terror. Serving in the Northern army during the American Civil War, he fought in many battles. Rewarded for bravery, he rose in the ranks. But then he lost his right arm in battle and became a prisoner of war.

While in prison, another captured soldier noticed that Whittle had been reading a New Testament. The man asked Whittle to pray with him, but he was reluctant, since he had not committed his life to Christ. But he finally agreed.

Whittle later wrote, “In a few broken words I confessed my sins and asked Christ to forgive me. I then prayed earnestly for the boy. He became quiet and pressed my hand as I prayed and pleaded God’s promises. When I arose from my knees, he was dead. A look of peace had come over his troubled face.” God had used the dying man to bring Whittle to salvation.

After the war, Whittle led many Souls to Christ and wrote many hymns. One hymn was inspired by the hope he felt about “the coming of the Lord.” The thought of His coming brought assurance and peace to the hearts of many who, like Whittle, had endured the Civil War. This hope, he wrote, provides “an anchor sure to hold when storms betide us; a refuge for the soul, where in quiet we may hide us.”

Today, no matter what you’re going through, you can place your hope in God. Remember: Jesus is coming again, and you will spend eternity with Him! Rejoice and be glad, and allow your heart to be filled with hope.
