The Birthday of a King

William Harold Neidlinger made many contributions to the cultural life of America and Europe. Born in 1863, he made great impact as a conductor, voice teacher, and organist. He was a prolific composer and wrote operas, cantatas, and hymns. He also was a passionate humanitarian and did extensive work in education. Because of his love for children, he even established a school for those who were handicapped.

Particularly during the Christmas season, we remember Neidlinger because of a hymn he wrote that celebrated the birth of Jesus. It’s called, “The Birthday of a King.”

Neidlinger poured his considerable musical skills into the composition, writing a stirring melody line that has soared into many triumphant performances and brought joy to many Believers around the world.

But the essential message is very simple: Jesus was born to be King. Yes, He was born “in the little village of Bethlehem.” Yes, it was “a humble birthplace.” But Neidlinger reminded us, “O how much God gave to us that day.” Through Jesus, God provided us with a “path” that is “a perfect, holy way.”

He imagined the scene that the shepherds must have beheld that holy night: “Alleluia! O how the angels sang. Alleluia! How it rang! And the sky was bright with a holy light, ’twas the birthday of a King.”

When the magi came to Jerusalem, they knew they were looking for a King. Even though Jesus was but a child and born in a lowly stable, they offered Him gifts worthy of royalty.

Jesus still is the King. He reigns over Heaven and earth.

Today, join your voice with the choirs of angels and people of all ages, from all nations. Praise and worship Him. Sing “Alleluia!”
