Thanksgiving

Depression is a widespread and growing problem. In the United States, the Center for Disease Control says that about 10% of Americans suffer from depression. A recent BBC report revealed that children as young as five are being treated for depression in the UK.

There are many reasons for this depression. People can become depressed simply by focusing on their troubles and problems. Or, as some think about world events, their hearts can become preoccupied by fears and worries.

But everything changes when we fill our lives with praise and thanksgiving. The Bible tells us to remember the many reasons we have to be grateful: “For the LORD is good; His lovingkindness is everlasting and His faithfulness to all generations.”

We are commanded to come before Him with thanksgiving and praise, to be thankful and bless His name. We are not to be quiet but rather should “shout joyfully to the LORD” (v. 1) and celebrate the greatness of our God. Instead of allowing the cares of life to dominate us, the Bible says we are to “serve the LORD with gladness; come before Him with joyful singing” (v. 2).

We serve the God of all creation! “Know that the LORD Himself is God; it is He who has made us, and not we ourselves.” We can trust in Him, because “we are His people and the sheep of His pasture” (v. 3).

Today, put this psalm into practice. Do not allow darkness to dominate your heart and mind. Don’t be discouraged or afraid.

One by one, think of the things for which you can be thankful. Then starting praising and thanking God. Life’s problems will come and go, but the Lord’s lovingkindness is everlasting, and His faithfulness will last to all generations…including you!
