Temptation
•2 MinutesHoratio Richmond Palmer grew up in a home where faith was celebrated. Born on this day in 1834 in Sherburne, New York, he was only seven when he began singing in the church choir, directed by his father. He dedicated his adult life to teaching, conducting, and writing music, most notably leading as many as 20,000 singers in the Church Choral Union in New York.
Later in his life, Palmer recalled one day in 1868. He was working “on the dry subject of ‘theory,’ when the complete idea” for a hymn about temptation “flashed upon” him. He quickly wrote both the words and music. This became the hymn, “Yield Not to Temptation.”
Palmer realized that each of us experiences temptations, but we can look to Jesus for help. He wrote, “Ask the Savior to help you, comfort, strengthen and keep you; He is willing to aid you, He will carry you through.”
Palmer also realized that each person has responsibilities. We need to “shun evil companions” and “yield not to temptation, for yielding is sin.” Every victory over temptation helps us grow spiritually stronger. Our witness becomes more powerful: “Each victory will help you some other to win.” We need to “fight manfully onward, dark passions subdue,” and “look ever to Jesus.”
Are you facing temptations? Don’t give up, or give in. You are not alone. Everyone is tempted. The Bible reminds us that “God is faithful.” He promises that He “will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able.” He will provide a way of escape for you!
