Taught to War

It was a moment to celebrate! Finally, the Israelites had entered the Promised Land. Having followed God’s leading, they might have expected Him to give them instant victories. To eliminate every adversary and free them from all opposition. But, in fact, He did the opposite. Instead He intentionally left nations there that would oppose them. Why?

He allowed this opposition so “the generations of the Israelites might know and be taught to war,” particularly “those who previously knew nothing of it.” These problems also would test them so God would know if they would listen to Him and obey His commands (v. 4). In short, they needed the personal experience, and God needed to see how they would respond.

The same principles may be true for us. Instead of smooth sailing and clear roads, we may experience difficulties, challenges, and roadblocks. We may face opposition, and feel stretched by the burdens of life.

If this happens to you, remember that God likely will provide opportunities for you to learn the truths about His Kingdom. As He did with the Israelites, He may be seeking to teach you, to drive you deeper that you might mature in your faith, and learn more about His power, Word, and Spirit. He may be examining your heart, to see how you react to problems. And, He may be helping you “know and be taught to war.”

If you are experiencing problems, don’t be confused or give up. God is with you. He is training and equipping you, and giving you the experiences you need. Commit yourself to Him and faithfully obey His Word, trusting that He will bring you into greater victory and blessing.
