“Be strong and of a good courage, fear not, nor be afraid of them: for the LORD thy God, he it is that doth go with thee; he will not fail thee, nor forsake thee.” Deuteronomy 31:6 KJV

Alexander Solzhenitsyn wanted to be a writer but, for practical reasons, turned to mathematics. Born in southwestern Russia on this date in 1918, his choices were dominated by the realities of life in the Soviet Union.

His path took an unexpected turn in 1945, when, as a soldier in the Soviet army, he was arrested for making critical remarks in a private letter. Without a trial, he was sentenced to eight years of hard labor.

During this time in prison, he began writing about life in the Soviet Union. Knowing that his words could offend powerful people, he would not even allow his closest friends to see what he wrote. Finally, in 1961, he decided to publish his writings. The government reacted with hostility, banning his works and forcing him into exile.

But his bravery led to worldwide acclaim. He went on to receive the Nobel Prize for literature in 1970. Today, he is honored for his literary skills but also for his willingness to risk all for the sake of his convictions.

The Bible makes it clear that Christians, too, can expect opposition. But many are afraid and not willing to take a stand for their faith. Some just are comfortable conforming to the world’s patterns.

During this time of year, we are reminded that the angel told the shepherds, “Do not be afraid.” Yes, this is a season for joy but also boldness. Remember that God promised never to leave or forsake us, no matter what happens.

In every situation you face, remember that you do not need to be afraid. God is with you. He will not fail or forget you. You can be bold in Jesus’ name!

Prayer: Father, help me to be strong and courageous. I believe that You are with me, and that You will not leave or forsake me. Deliver me from fear, and give me boldness. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
