Strength in Weakness

Do you feel too flawed for God to use you for anything significant? Samson’s story shows how God works through willing, imperfect people.

“Then 3,000 men of Judah … said to Samson, ‘Do you not know that the Philistines are rulers over us? What then is this that you have done to us?’” (Judges 15:11).

Although uniquely called by God, Samson appears to have been undisciplined and ruled by carnal desires. He lived at a time when Judah was dominated and intimidated by the Philistines.

We observe this in the aftermath of Samson bringing destruction on some Philistines. Samson was marrying a Philistine woman, and during the wedding ceremony, he’d posed a riddle. When the men couldn’t solve his riddle, they pressured Samson’s new bride into drawing the answer from him, which led to an outburst of anger and violence.

Later, he learned that his wife’s father had given her to one of Samson’s friends instead. Angered, Samson caught 300 foxes and turned them “tail to tail and put a torch between each pair of tails” (v. 4). He set them on fire and released the foxes, burning the fields of the Philistines.

When the Philistines marched on Judah, demanding that Samson be turned over to them, the men of Judah convinced him to cooperate and let himself be bound with ropes. But when Samson arrived in the presence of the Philistines, “the Spirit of the LORD rushed upon him” (v. 14), and he broke the ropes and attacked the Philistines. He stood up to Israel’s oppressors and brought victory, willing to fight when everyone else was prepared to accept defeat.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does the Bible include such a flawed figure as Samson among its heroes?

Scripture doesn’t sanitize its characters; Samson’s story shows God can work through imperfect, even undisciplined people when they’re willing to be used, without endorsing their flaws.

What does it mean that “the Spirit of the Lord rushed upon him”?

It describes a sudden, God-given empowerment for a specific task—a pattern seen throughout Judges—rather than a permanent character trait Samson possessed on his own.

How can I find boldness when I feel intimidated, like the men of Judah did?

Start by naming the specific fear honestly in prayer, then ask God for courage rooted in His presence rather than in your own confidence or the odds around you.
