Sticking Together Like Glue

God’s Word makes it clear: We need each other. We all are placed in the Body of Christ, where we draw strength from others (1 Corinthians 12:14-27). He also has placed us in families, to provide us with nurture and fellowship.

But the most intimate relationship of all is that of marriage. From the beginning, God made it clear that, for a successful marriage, a man had to leave his father and mother and “be joined to his wife” (Genesis 2:24). Paul based his teaching on marriage on this same truth. The Greek words he used reveal that husbands must adhere like glue to their wives. They must be inseparable, like one flesh!

This absolute commitment within marriage extends to every part of life. Marriage means an entirely new relationship…an entirely different set of priorities…and an entirely different attitude and lifestyle. The husband must “so perfectly unite himself to his wife that the two shall be one” (Williams translation). The husband and wife also are to think harmoniously…to share life…to support each other…and to be honest with each other.

This principle was true in Paul’s time. It remains true today.

Jesus provided a perfect example of the kind of commitment God desires in marriages. Just like Jesus’ actions toward the church, husbands are to love their wives sacrificially. And wives are to honor their husbands (Ephesians 5:32-33).

These principles are the opposite of what our culture and media often promote today. Instead of valuing commitment, we see people celebrating their individuality and exalting their personal interests and pleasures. But the Bible makes clear that God wants us to understand the importance of commitment and sacrifice—in marriage and in the Body of Christ.

In your life, seek to follow Jesus’ example in all your relationships, whether at work, church, or home.
