Standing Watch

“Be on the alert, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.” 1 Corinthians 16:13 NASB

It was a turning point in history. A moment when destinies were being determined and the fate of nations was in question. Many people were afraid, but a handful, like Paul Revere, were bold. Revere, a silversmith by trade, was one of those willing to commit his life to fight for freedom and to warn others.

In 1775, British soldiers had been ordered to Concord, Massachusetts, to destroy supplies and arrest colonial leaders. When colonists learned about these efforts, Revere was sent to warn the people, reaching Lexington about midnight. It all took place on this day in 1775, when Revere made his famous “ride,” bringing news about the approaching British army.

When the British arrived in Lexington the next day, the “minutemen” were waiting. Their resulting victory was made possible because Revere (and others) had been vigilant and alert, and ready to take action.

Paul told the Corinthians how important it was to stand watch and be on guard. He knew they were in the middle of spiritual warfare, with forces trying to defeat and discourage them, robbing them of God’s blessings. Throughout their lives, they needed to be alert. To stand firm and not compromise. To be strong, trusting in the Lord.

Today, every Christian needs to realize that we are in a spiritual war that we cannot ignore. God is ready to protect us and give us victory. But we must play our part. As Peter wrote, “Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour” (1 Peter 5:8).

Make sure that you are alert and ready. Confident in victory. Trusting in God. Ready to fight.

Prayer: Father, help me to be alert to the attacks of the enemy. And help me to be vigilant. Thank You for giving me victory! In Jesus’ name. Amen.
