Spiritual Dimension

Have you wondered what you’re missing by seeing life through physical eyes alone? On the mountain in Matthew 17, the disciples caught a glimpse of more.

“Jesus … led them up a high mountain … he was transfigured before them, and his face shone like the sun, and his clothes became white as light. And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with him” (Matthew 17:1–2).

It was a moment that transcended space and time. There, high on a mountain, Jesus was speaking to Moses and Elijah. Here was an unmistakable demonstration of the reality of eternal life. But the disciples failed to grasp what was happening.

Jesus, Peter, James, and John were all in the same place. They all saw the same things. But Jesus was living in the spiritual dimension, while the disciples merely observed, reacting in the flesh.

Only after Jesus’ resurrection would these disciples begin to understand the spiritual dimension. And after the Holy Spirit fell on the Day of Pentecost, they would be changed and enter the spiritual dimension Jesus experienced on the Mount of Transfiguration. Then they would truly realize God was with them and become conscious of the full impact of the Holy Spirit.

How often we, too, simply look at the physical dimension of life. We may say that we believe in eternal life, but it still can be hard to see with spiritual eyes.

Take heart! God can transform our lives and free us from earthbound, human dimensions. He can help us get a glimpse of Heaven and be transformed by His power.

Today, ask God to open your eyes to the spiritual dimension. Don’t allow your flesh to blind you. By the Spirit, let Him show you the reality of eternity!

Reflection Question: Ask to know and be changed by the presence of God in your life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why did only Peter, James, and John witness the Transfiguration?

Scripture doesn’t state the reason explicitly, though this inner circle of three appears elsewhere at other pivotal moments, such as Gethsemane, suggesting a pattern of specific preparation for later ministry.

Why couldn’t the disciples grasp what they were seeing in the moment?

They hadn’t yet experienced the resurrection or Pentecost—key turning points that later gave them a framework to understand spiritual realities they could only observe, not yet enter, at the Transfiguration.

What does it look like to develop “spiritual eyes” in ordinary life?

It starts with treating Scripture and prayer as more than routine, and asking God to help you notice His presence and activity in circumstances you’d otherwise write off as merely physical or coincidental.
