Joy

Daily Devotional•3 Minutes

Can you have real joy even in the middle of pain? The night before the cross, Jesus spoke to His disciples about a joy no one could take away.

“These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full” (John 15:11).

That very night, Jesus would be betrayed. The next day, He would be tortured and crucified. Yet His focus was on joy! This last evening with His disciples, He taught about a joy that would be complete and “full.” Yes, He warned that they would suffer and “weep and lament.” Meanwhile, the world around them would “rejoice.” But their grief would “turn into joy” (John 16:20).

Jesus asked them to consider the experience of a woman giving birth. She endured pain because of the joy of bringing a child into the world. In the same way, Jesus said the disciples would suffer short-term pain and grief, but all of this would be turned into a joy that no one could take away. It would last forever.

Jesus also taught that they would receive joy when they prayed in His name. Specifically, He commanded them to “ask, and you will receive, that your joy may be full.” They were to pray in His name boldly and expectantly. Along with answers to their prayers, they would receive fullness of joy (John 16:23–24).

At the close of this teaching, Jesus told the Father that He had spoken to the disciples “that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves” (John 17:13).

Stand firm in your faith and be bold in prayer. Yield to the presence of the Spirit and receive the joy that Jesus promised—fullness of joy!

Reflection Question: Ask God for fullness of joy in whatever you’re facing today.

Frequently Asked Questions

How could Jesus focus on joy the night before His crucifixion?

His joy wasn’t circumstantial—it was rooted in the Father’s will and the outcome beyond the cross, a pattern He invited His disciples into as well.

What’s the difference between happiness and the joy Jesus describes here?

Happiness typically depends on favorable circumstances; the joy John 15 describes is tied to relationship with Christ and answered prayer in His name, which can persist through hardship.

How can I experience more of this “full” joy day to day?

Jesus ties it directly to abiding in Him (John 15:4-11) and bringing requests to God in prayer—joy grows out of ongoing connection, not a single decision.

Prayer
Father, I bring You my cares. Thank You for giving me joy. I take my eyes off my circumstances and focus on You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
