Sovereign Spirit

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

Sovereign Spirit reminds us that God’s Spirit moves as He wills, transforming lives and situations. Surrender to His power and trust His control.

“The Spirit of God came upon him also, so that he went along prophesying continually until he came to Naioth in Ramah.”—1 Samuel 19:23 NASB

It was an unexpected sight. Observers wondered, “Is Saul also among the prophets?”

Saul was on a mission to kill David. He tracked him to Naioth, but when his messengers arrived there, instead of capturing David, they were overwhelmed with the sight of Samuel and other men prophesying. The Spirit of God fell on Saul’s messengers, and they too began prophesying. Saul sent a second group, but the same thing happened to them. And then to a third group!

Saul decided to go himself. But he began to prophesy also, falling totally under the control of the Spirit. He had a similar experience earlier: After Samuel anointed him as king, the Spirit had come mightily upon Saul, and “God changed his heart” (1 Samuel 10:1–11).

Sadly, Saul returned to his former ways. Yet for that one amazing day, he experienced the sovereignty of the Holy Spirit again.

Jesus said, “The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it is coming from and where it is going; so is everyone who has been born of the Spirit” (John 3:8). Even in our time, the Spirit does what He wants, for His reasons. And His power is unlimited.

Today, pray for the Spirit to move, so we can experience His power. Submit your life to His control. He can transform you and change the world!

Reflection Question: What can you do today to submit more fully to the Spirit’s leading?
