Simple Truth

William of Ockham was an influential religious leader and scholar in 14th century England. The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy describes him as “among the most prominent figures in the history of philosophy during the High Middle Ages.”

Today, however, he is most remembered for what is called “Ockham’s razor.” This was a principle or guideline which stated that “it is pointless to do with more what can be done with less.”

This principle has been applied throughout the past six centuries, as a reminder of the benefit of simple solutions. For example, when two theories might work, Ockham’s principle is that the simpler should be preferred.

This principle reminds us of important spiritual truths. Paul taught the Corinthians that there are forces in the world that seek to complicate our lives. People and Satan can attempt to disrupt our faith, confuse us, or distract us with clever-sounding doctrines.

Paul noted how Eve had been given everything she needed for success, blessing, and victory. She just needed to obey God’s Word. Instead, she was deceived by the serpent, who confused her with suggestions that led her to stray from God’s truth.

Today, remember that it’s important to be on guard against temptations that might lead you away from “your pure and undivided devotion to Christ.” Spend time reading God’s Word and learning to recognize His truth. Don’t be deceived by false doctrines, complicated teachings, or people who might try to mislead you. Trust your life to Jesus, obey God’s Word, and seek to serve Him with your life. It’s that simple.
