Signs

Signs were important to Romans. Historian Philip Freeman has described how the role of priests in that society originated in their history. These men were “charged with learning the will of the gods by interpreting divine signs.” People looked everywhere for signs that would help them make decisions and understand the future.

The apostle Paul, so wise in understanding that culture, stressed the importance of signs for Christianity in his letter to the Romans. But these signs were a byproduct of faith in Jesus. Following Him was not just about beliefs and rules. It was based on a dynamic faith, a real relationship. Being a Christian meant having complete access to the power of the Spirit. Filled with this power, all things were possible.

The importance of signs was stressed throughout the New Testament. Not only had the Father endorsed Jesus “by doing powerful miracles, wonders, and signs through him.” But “a deep sense of awe” spread as “the apostles performed many miraculous signs and wonders” (Acts 2:22, 43). These signs and wonders convinced people of the power of God’s Spirit.

As the Bible makes clear, signs and wonders are a part of the Christian faith. And signs and wonders still take place. Ask God to reveal His power in your life. Don’t be timid or doubt. Believe God for miracles, signs, and wonders so that others might know He is real!
