Trusting in Jesus

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

“In You our fathers trusted; they trusted and You rescued them. To You they cried out and they fled to safety; in You they trusted and were not disappointed.”—Psalm 22:4–5 NASB

Louisa Stead could have been bitter about the way her life developed. Born in England in 1850, she felt called to be a missionary, but her frail health prevented her from going to the field. She moved to America where she was married in 1875. But instead of the bliss she might have expected, she watched as her husband drowned while trying to rescue a boy who was swimming by a beach. After this tragedy, she finally was able to leave for the mission field in 1880, serving for years in both South Africa and Rhodesia.

It was a challenging life, but through every situation, Stead learned to trust in Jesus.

In 1882, she wrote a hymn about what Jesus meant to her in life’s difficulties. It was sweet to trust Him—simply to take Him at His Word and rest upon His promises. He had proven Himself over and over again.

She knew that His blood had cleansed her from every sin. When she trusted Him, He gave her “life and rest, and joy and peace.” She could rejoice because of what He had done for her. She knew He would be with her to the end.

Remember that you can trust Jesus. His promises are true. He loves you. He has a plan for your life. Do not resist Him. Take Him at His Word. Trust in Him for your needs!
