Sharing the Rewards

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

In sharing the rewards, David teaches that all contributions matter in God’s work. Whether seen or unseen, every role has value and shares in the victory.

“‘For as is the share of the one who goes down into the battle, so shall be the share of the one who stays by the baggage; they shall share alike.’ So it has been from that day forward.”—1 Samuel 30:24–25 NASB

Who gets the credit when a great victory is won? Who receives the honor and glory? Who gets the reward? Throughout history, questions like these have caused divisions and disputes.

David faced this issue after 400 of his men pursued and defeated the Amalekites who had captured their families and possessions. When the 400 returned, they encountered 200 peers who had been “too exhausted to follow David” (v. 21). Some did not want to share the rewards with these 200. This was a potentially dangerous, divisive moment, but David declared that everyone was to share in the rewards.

Paul faced this same challenge when the early church was being threatened by divisions and competition. He said followers of Jesus needed to realize that while each one is special and every role is important, ultimately, we all are part of the same body.

These principles are still true today. Each of us is special in the sight of God, and each of us has a role to play. Some may get more credit and attention, while others are called to work behind the scenes, perhaps providing financial assistance or praying. The key is that the work cannot succeed unless all of us do our jobs.

Focus on the tasks God has called you to fulfill. You have a unique destiny and purpose. Serve Him faithfully and fully. When you do, you will share in the rewards of His victory!

Reflection Question: How can you faithfully serve today in the role God has given you?

Prayer
Heavenly Father, thank You for Your calling on my life. Help me fulfill the role You have for me in the body of Christ. In Jesus’ name, amen.
