Setting an Example

Since the day that I was appointed to be their governor in the land of Judah … for twelve years, neither I nor my kinsmen have eaten the governor’s food allowance […] because the forced labor was heavy on this people.—Nehemiah 5:14, 18 NASB

Before Nehemiah arrived as the governor of Judah, some Jewish leaders had taken advantage of their fellow people. They did not care about God’s laws or standards but were willing to manipulate circumstances for their profit.

Nehemiah forced these men to change their ways. But he felt compelled to do more. Recognizing the impact of his own actions on people throughout the country, he felt a responsibility to set higher standards. For example, as governor he had a special food allowance but declined to accept it for 12 years. He didn’t want any special benefits.

Instead of taking advantage of his position, Nehemiah was filled with the “fear of God” (v. 15). He also realized the huge task that was before him and applied himself to that work. He did not make personal profits and did not buy any land. He cared about the needs of the people around him and felt that it was more important to set a good example than to enjoy the short-term privileges and pleasures of power.

Today, realize the influence you have on others. Instead of focusing on short-term, personal benefits, think about how you can bless the people around you. Focus on the assignments God has given you and what you do with your resources. Seek to set an example. Ask Him to help you to become a model others will want to emulate. Remember, you are Christ’s ambassador.
