Set Free!

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

“It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a yoke of slavery.”—Galatians 5:1 NASB

In 1906 when Oswald Smith was 16, he gave his life to Christ. This led to a lifetime of service, including founding the People’s Church in Toronto. Although he had no special musical training, God used him to write more than 1,000 hymns. He once said that melody and rhythm naturally flowed from within him.

In 1933, Smith was sent some music written by A.H. Ackley, who wondered if Smith could find appropriate words. Smith found that “the theme sang itself into my heart.”

In this hymn, called “The Song of the Soul Set Free,” Smith wrote about his love for Jesus, who was the “fairest of ten thousand.” He was “my Savior, the Lily of the Valley, the Bright and Morning Star.”

Reflecting on his experience, Smith described how his heart had been burdened, “but now I am forgiven.” He had “a song of gladness,” and “joy bells” rang in his heart. He could sing, “for Christ has ransomed me.” He remembered how he had lived in darkness and could not see the light. “But now I sing His praises,” for Jesus set him free.

Many believers still seem burdened and fail to experience the joy of the Lord. But, as Oswald Smith realized, our souls can be set free in Jesus. Are you burdened? Do you have a heavy heart? Turn to Him today. Trust in Him. Let Him set your soul free!

Reflection Question: What burdens do you need to give to God, so you can be free?
