Set Apart

Even after being saved, Believers still face challenges and temptations. However, though we may remain flawed human beings, everything has changed. Peter provides four descriptions of ways we are different.

First, we are “chosen.” God Himself picked each of us. He has a special design for each person. He has given each of us specific personalities and character traits, unique gifts, talents, and resources. Further, we are not isolated individuals, but part of a chosen “race,” connected to each other as part of the Body of Christ.

Second, we are “a royal priesthood.” Under the Old Testament, only a select group of people were priests. But, under the new covenant, all of God’s people are priests, called to represent Him, to make intercession on behalf of others, to know His Word, to live according to His Word, to declare His Word, and to serve Him in whatever capacity He calls us.

Third, we are a “holy nation.” By definition, we are to be “set aside.” Everything about our lives is to be different—our character and lifestyle, the words we speak and the things we do. People should notice a difference.

Fourth, we are “a people for God’s own possession.” We are not here to satisfy our own interests. We belong to God, and our fulfillment comes from serving Him.

Today, remember that God has called you “out of darkness into His marvelous light.” Thanks to His light, everything has changed. Find your highest joy and greatest pleasure from fulfilling His call on your life.
