Sensitive to God’s Message

Jesus spoke words that had a very clear meaning. Speaking of “bread” and “leaven,” He was using words that were part of His disciples’ daily vocabulary. Yet they didn’t realize He was trying to speak about spiritual things. They did not have spiritual sensitivity to discern the true meaning.

Jesus was amazed by their lack of discernment, by how blind they were to the truths He had been teaching them, and by how much they still were dominated by the flesh and the things of this world.

This is a lesson that all of us need to learn. It is too easy to be preoccupied and focused on the issues of everyday life. Like the disciples, we can be blind or deaf to the Spirit of God. We may not be aware that God is trying to get our attention.

It is important that we learn to listen to God all of the time. We need to become more sensitive to His voice in order to receive His warnings, His instructions, and His wisdom.

Today, ask God to give you greater spiritual discernment. Ask Him to help you be more sensitive to the many ways He might be speaking to you.

Remember: He can speak to you at any time of the day or night, even through the most ordinary aspects of life, and even through things that don’t seem to have any obvious spiritual significance.
