Security and Stability

Deer have a unique combination of gifts and resources. Their compact bodies and powerful legs make them good runners. Their feet are designed so they can run up to 40 miles per hour, and leap 15 to 20 feet forward.

Deer can adapt to many different conditions. Having no permanent homes, they roam widely in search of food. And they are able to live in groups or alone.

Deer were an important symbol for David when he wrote Psalm 18. The words to this psalm were inspired when God delivered David “from the hand of all his enemies, and from the hand of Saul” (2 Samuel 22:1). This occurred when David hid near En Gedi, and it was a time when he desperately needed security and stability.

In our lives, there are many ways in which God can make our feet like the feet of deer! Like deer, we need the ability to move fast. We need to be ready for any situation, able to recognize and escape from our enemies. Like deer, we must be ready to move as God calls us.

Like deer, we need to be tender and willing to show compassion for others, but also have the strength to confront situations that require resolute courage.

Like deer, we must have confidence that we can survive in any situation, as long as we trust in God. And, like deer, we need to adapt to wherever God may lead us.

In your life, make sure that you have full confidence that you can depend on God. Remember that “His way is perfect” and His Word is “proven.”

You never have to be afraid, for He will be your shield. And He will give you security and stability, just like a deer in high places.
