Cardinal de Richelieu became a powerful leader of the Roman Catholic Church in the 17th century, but it was as a politician that he is best remembered. Born in September 1585, Richelieu was prime minister of France from 1624 to 1642. His priority was insuring that the king’s will would be obeyed. He strengthened the power of the king by dealing with all opposition severely, including ordering the destruction of all fortresses controlled by the nobility. Many nobles who rebelled were executed or exiled.

His ruthlessness helped make France the most powerful country in Europe. A master manipulator, Richelieu once said, “Give me six lines written by the most honorable of men, and I will find an excuse in them to hang him.” People throughout France came to realize how true this statement was. Many feared him, and the French state.

There are so many things people can be afraid about. Crime. War. Terrorism. Problems with our jobs or families. Finances. Many are afraid because of concerns that others will twist their words, and worry what other people might say or do. The Bible gives us this simple solution: The path to being safe is to trust in the Lord.

Today, you may be going through anxious times. You may be afraid about the future, or worried what other people may say or do against you. But the Bible assures you that God wants you to place your trust in Him. You can be confident that He will give you justice, and keep you safe.
