Riddles and Parables

Inspiration MinistriesBy Inspiration Ministries2 Minutes

God called Ezekiel to deliver a message to His people. What was unusual was the form: It was to be a “riddle” and a “parable.” After delivering the message, God asked, “Do you not know what these things mean?” Clearly, He felt that this parable, this riddle was the best way to deliver His message.

This was not the only time God spoke this way. On another occasion, He similarly told Ezekiel to “speak a parable” (Ezekiel 24:3). Some were not happy about this form. In fact, Ezekiel was criticized for this practice, complaining that others asked, “Is he not just speaking parables?” (Ezekiel 20:49)

We might wonder why God spoke in riddles and parables. We might see a clue later when He responded to a proverb that was widely repeated throughout the land (Ezekiel 18:1-3). In other words, parables were common. But these forms also were ways to get the attention of listeners. The parables might just seem like stories but they could communicate complex messages and deep truths. These “riddles” could seem vague but also could be thought-provoking, and challenging.

For similar reasons, Jesus frequently spoke with parables (Matthew 13:34). And His parables had a profound influence on His listeners, with deep insights that still challenge us to dig deeper.

Is it possible that God might speak to us through riddles or parables? Through things we see around us? Through experiences we go through? He might speak through things we read. Observations. Revelations from His Word. Times of prayer, or the leading of His Spirit.

In your life, remember the many ways that God might be speaking to you. Sometimes directly. Sometimes in subtle ways. Sometimes in stories. Sometimes in parables or riddles.

Seek to sensitive to His leading. Learning to recognize His voice.
