Recapturing Fatherhood

According to a recent Gallup poll, 60% of American teens agreed that “it is more difficult to be a father today than 20 or 30 years ago.” With a growing number of single-parent households, more than one-third of all American children “live either in single-parent or blended families.” Gallup concluded, “The roles and expectations of American fathers have changed dramatically.”

But the Bible warns that many family problems are caused by fathers who do not fulfill their God-given role. A recent study revealed that “when fathers are involved [with the family] their children learn more, perform better in school, and exhibit healthier behavior.”

Of course, some fathers are deeply involved with their children. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there were 176,000 stay-at-home dads in 2011, voluntarily staying at home to care for their family while their wives worked.

Yet, sadly, while at home, many fathers are preoccupied and distanced from their children. Amazingly, a recent study revealed that 54% of 4-6 year olds actually prefer watching TV to spending time with their father! No wonder so many families have problems.

The Bible says God has given fathers an important role in the family. They have a special impact on their children as they instruct and teach (Proverbs 1:8), correct and chasten (Proverbs 3:11-12). Yes, they can “exasperate” the children at times, but they also can help bring them up “in the training and instruction of the Lord.”

The Bible makes it clear that everyone has an important role to play, both in the family and in society. In your life, ask God to show you how to be a better parent or grandparent, friend or relative. Our families urgently need men and women who are committed to God and the precepts of His Word.
