Real Belief

“These are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.”
John 20:31 NKJV

From the time he was a young boy, August Francke knew that he wanted to be a minister. Born on this day in 1663 in northeastern Germany, he made his mark as a preacher and scholar, serving as a professor of Hebrew at the University of Leipzig. Yet, while outwardly seeming to demonstrate genuine faith, in reality, he harbored doubts. And he often engaged in a life of sin.

Inside, he knew things weren’t right with God but he continued this masquerade. Then, when twenty-four, he was asked to preach a message about Jesus’ words to Thomas from John’s Gospel. He knew that these words describe the certainty and change that takes place when someone believes “that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God.”

Francke realized that he did not have that confidence. Rather than just going through the motions, he decided to get serious with God about his own belief. After a time of intense prayer, Francke knew that his life had been changed. He would write, “I arose a completely different person from the one who had knelt down.”

He demonstrated that change throughout his life. Preaching Bible-centered messages. Teaching young people about the Gospel. Seeking to reach the Lost.

He also demonstrated his faith in practical ways, building an orphanage, providing a shelter for unmarried women, and opening a school for the poor. Through his writing, preaching, and the Bible school he founded, his passion moved many to become missionaries, while inspiring others to take seriously their relationship with God.

Many people today have never had the kind of transforming experience with God that changed Francke. Make sure that your life has been transformed. That you don’t have a second-hand faith but really believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God. That you are living for Him.

Prayer: Father, I commit my life to You. Help me to serve You. Thank You for giving me eternal life. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
