Ready

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

Even when delays come, those who are truly ready will stay filled with the Spirit and alert, prepared for the Bridegroom’s arrival.

“Now while the bridegroom was delaying, they all got drowsy and began to sleep.”—Matthew 25:5 NASB

The ten virgins all thought they were ready for the bridegroom. Taking their lamps, they went out to meet him. But when he delayed his appearance, only five of them turned out to be “prudent” (v. 2) and truly ready and prepared. Why? Because they had brought oil.

The other five were “foolish” (v. 2). They weren’t ready because they had no oil.

The oil in this story is a symbol of the Holy Spirit. The unprepared virgins neglected to draw on the power of the Spirit, instead depending on their own strength, and their spiritual vessels were soon empty. Jesus was teaching us to continually be filled with His Spirit and ready when He comes again as our Bridegroom.

Soon after hearing this parable, the disciples had an opportunity to apply its message. They entered the Garden of Gethsemane, and while Jesus prayed with intensity, they fell asleep. Like the foolish virgins, they were unprepared. Jesus told them, “Keep watching and praying that you may not enter into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak” (Matthew 26:39–41).

Are you depending on yourself and your own strength, or are you filled with the Spirit and depending on His power? Are you spiritually alert and ready for the coming of the Lord? Do you “keep watching and praying”? God has given you His Spirit to protect you, guide you, teach you, and empower you.

Reflection Question: How are you actively staying spiritually prepared in seasons of waiting?
