Reacting to Adversity

The experience of problems can reveal much about our character. Feeling forced into a corner, we need to decide where to turn. What to do.

Faced with crises like these, some who have rejected God react by repenting and turning to Him. But not Ahaz. When he faced trouble, Ahaz became even more unfaithful. When his kingdom experienced a painful downfall, he became even more devoted to the wrong influences.

When Israel was defeated, he didn’t realize that this was the result of disobeying God. Instead, he decided to adopt the religion and lifestyle of the people who had defeated them.

He hadn’t learned from history.

Many people follow the same patterns. They adopt the patterns and lifestyle of the culture around them, doing what seems popular. Believers even can allow this thinking to influence their faith in God. To distract them. To seduce them into going in the wrong direction.

But the experience of Ahaz reminds us that we have choices about how to react to circumstances. That we cannot expect God’s blessing and protection unless we trust in Him.

David realized these truths. When he faced adversity and made mistakes, he turned to God. He wrote, “In the day of trouble He will keep me safe in His dwelling” (Psalm 27:5). He knew that “the salvation of the righteous comes from the Lord; He is their stronghold in time of trouble” (Psalm 37:39).

In your life, remember these examples. When you face difficulties, turn your heart to God. Let Him be your stronghold. Keep focusing on Him.
