Praise Everywhere

In the vision that God gave Ezekiel, he saw a place in the temple designed just for musicians. There were “chambers for the singers” but they were “from the outside to the inner gate.”

Through this description, we have a sense that music was everywhere! We can imagine how glorious the sounds must have been, as music echoed throughout the chambers.

This picture reminds us of how important music is to God. The Bible is filled with the admonition to worship God through music. We are told that “all who take refuge in You” are to “be glad” “sing for joy” (Psalm 5:11). To sing “praises of the name of the Lord” (Psalm 7:17).

Heaven itself is filled with music. There, we hear “a new song,” declaring through music how the Lamb was worthy (Revelations 5:9). We read how 144,000 “sang a new song” (Revelation 14:3). How all who were victorious over the Beast “sang the song of Moses” (Revelation 15:3).

But the Bible also calls us to praise Him with instruments, with trumpets, harps, and lyres. With timbrel and stringed instruments. With pipes and cymbals (Psalm 150:3-5).

Music has been central to revivals and worship throughout the centuries. In 1538, Martin Luther wrote, “With all my heart I would extol the precious gift of God in the noble art of music.” He wrote about how God had given “this precious gift” to remind us that we “are created to praise and magnify the Lord.”

The world often uses music to celebrate the flesh. To exalt performers. To make money. But we need to remember that God created music, and that music is part of His creation!

Today, remember that God gave you music that you might praise His name. Worship Him with songs and words. Celebrate the wonders of His creation through music!
