Plan and Save

“Now concerning the collection for the saints, as I directed the churches of Galatia, so do you also. On the first day of every week each one of you is to put aside and save, as he may prosper, so that no collections be made when I come.” 1 Corinthians 16:1-2 NASB

Paul tried to teach the Corinthians important principles about stewardship. It seemed that some had not been planning their gifts to God. They might have had excuses, but Paul wanted them to know that this lack of planning was unacceptable.

They knew God’s expectations. They knew that they owed everything to Him. Knowing these things, every week, they needed to lay aside resources that were to be given to God’s work.

How were they to plan and prepare? They were to “put aside,” save, or store up resources. These actions would help them remember that God was concerned about their lives all the time, not just when the collection was taken. Paul wanted these patterns to become habits they did every week.

What was the basis of their giving? Each person was to examine his or her own life, and act based on what they had been given.

Many Christians, even today, do not take seriously their obligation and responsibility, before God. They do not feel that it is important to give to His work. But the Bible makes clear that all Believers should develop the habit of giving. Giving to God helps us remember that everything we have belongs to Him, and that we need to make Him first in our lives.

Today, make sure that you are giving to God, planning and putting aside resources. Make this a priority, and a matter of prayer. Put God first in your life, and then show Him how committed you are by giving to Him from your time, talent, and treasure.

Prayer: Father, thank You for the resources that You have given me. I dedicate everything I have to You. Help me to plan and save so I faithfully can support Your work. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
