Personal Encounters

Inspiration MinistriesBy Inspiration Ministries2 Minutes

After His Resurrection, Jesus appeared to His disciples. However, Thomas was not with them, and when he returned, the others announced, “We have seen the Lord!”

It would seem that Thomas should have believed their account, but his past experiences with them didn’t seem to convince him. His comments must have sparked debate, for, in effect, he was doubting their credibility.

Eight days later, Jesus appeared to the disciples again. This time, Thomas was present. Jesus directly approached him and said, “Reach here with your finger, and see My hands; and reach here your hand and put it into My side; and do not be unbelieving, but believing.” Thomas could not deny what he saw, and he declared, “My Lord and my God!” (vs. 27-28)

Jesus knew that people in future generations would doubt the Resurrection, just like Thomas, regardless of the testimonies of others. Jesus was speaking to all who might identify with Thomas and want a personal encounter: “Because you have seen Me, have you believed? Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed” (v. 29).

Thomas’ reaction reminds us of how difficult it can be to believe solely based on the experiences of other people, even close friends or relatives. Thomas also demonstrates what can happen to those who do have these personal experiences and have their reservations addressed.

In your life, don’t be content with a secondhand faith. Remember how important it is to have a personal encounter with Jesus, to know Him yourself—not just know about Him. Take time to hear Him directly—not just hearing what other people say about Him.
