Perfect Peace

Edward Bickersteth had spent his life in ministry. Born in London in 1825, he became an influential church leader, serving as the editor of the Hymnal Companion to the Church of England’s Book of Common Prayer.

While on vacation in August 1875, Bickersteth heard a sermon based on Isaiah 26. The minister stressed the fact that the Hebrew text repeated the word we translate as “peace” (shalowm shalowm). The implication was that many in the world promised peace, but God could provide something more. Absolute perfection. Absolute peace.

Later that day, Bickersteth remembered these words when he visited a dying relative. Reading from Isaiah, he was impressed with the importance of peace and wrote a poem, he called “Peace, Perfect Peace.” Later this became the text for a beloved hymn.

Bickersteth began with a question, wondering if perfect peace was possible “in this dark world of sin.” But for believers he knew it was a reality.

Because of Jesus’ blood, we can have this peace. We may face difficulties and have challenges in life but “to do the will of Jesus, this is rest.” We may have “sorrows surging” all around us, but we can find calm in Jesus. If we feel alone, “in Jesus’ keeping we are safe,” and so are our loved ones.

We may not know the future, but Jesus “is on the throne.” And He “has vanquished death and all its powers.” Because of Him, we can say, “It is enough: earth’s struggles soon shall cease, and Jesus calls us to Heaven’s perfect peace.”

Is there any turmoil in your heart? Do you feel stress or worry? The Bible promises that God can give you His perfect peace. Remember, Jesus is on the throne. He has conquered death. And you can have His peace right now. Trust Him!
