Peace on Earth

In 1849, a friend asked Edmund Sears to write a Christmas poem. For inspiration, he turned to the social conditions of his time. As a pastor and a writer, Sears particularly was concerned about the impact of the industrial revolution and slavery on culture – even Christian culture. He was troubled that many people celebrated Christmas, but they did not realize the full impact of Jesus’ birth.

His poem was a reminder that Jesus came to make a difference in people’s lives and why His birth was still so relevant. Sears called the poem “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear.” He celebrated the angelic message, “Peace on the earth, goodwill to men,” reminding us that He came to give peace, hope, and freedom to everyone!

Sears knew that Jesus’ birth fulfilled much Old Testament prophecy. But Sears also knew that there would come a day when every prophecy in the Bible would be fulfilled.

As we look at world conditions today, the message of Jesus’ birth is more important than ever and still relevant. Many are afraid or worried. Millions are gripped by sin, disease, and despair. All these people need the Good News.

Remember that you can turn to Jesus for any problems you face. Whatever you feel, He can bring peace. But also remember that people all around you need the Gospel. Help change the world by bringing God’s peace to a hurting world.
