Peace and Good Will

In 1849, a friend asked Edmund Sears to write a Christmas poem. As a pastor, writer, and editor, Sears was sensitive to the social conditions of his world. In particular, he was concerned about the impact of the industrial revolution and slavery. He wanted to remind people that Jesus came to make a difference in the lives of people, and that He came to give peace, hope, and freedom to everyone!

Inspired by verses from Luke, Sears wrote a poem he called, “It Came Upon a Midnight Clear.” His goal was to celebrate the angelic message, “Peace on the earth, goodwill to men.”

Sears knew that the birth of Jesus fulfilled Bible prophecy, but Sears also pointed people to the day when every prophecy would be fulfilled. His last verse read, “For lo! the days are hastening on, by prophet bards foretold, when with the ever circling years comes round the age of gold; when peace shall over all the earth its ancient splendors fling, and the whole world send back the song which now the angels sing.”

This year, the message of the birth of Jesus is more important than ever. Many people are “sore afraid,” and millions suffer in the grip of sin, disease, and despair. The world needs people who are committed to God and willing to bring the Gospel message.

Today, if you are troubled, afraid, or in turmoil, turn to Jesus. He will give you His peace. But also remember: People all around you need the Gospel, and you can help change the world by bringing the message of God’s peace to a hurting world.
