Paul’s Four Pillars

“Finally, brethren, farewell. Become complete. Be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace will be with you.”—2 Corinthians 13:11 NKJV

As Paul closed his second letter to the church in Corinth, he focused on four summary truths. First, he urged believers to become complete, to be spiritually equipped and adjusted. Paul knew that it was not enough just to believe and have spiritual gifts. It is our assignment to become better equipped.

Second, Paul encouraged them to be of “good comfort.” The Greek word here is central to this letter. Paul emphasized this word because we all need this kind of comfort. And we are to be people who show care for and comfort others.

Third, Paul reminded them of the importance of unity of the Spirit. No one is to have an attitude of superiority. For there is only one body, not many (1 Corinthians 12:14).

Paul’s final admonition was for believers to live in peace with each other. This peace reflects the presence of the Spirit. It comes when we are surrendered to the Lordship of Jesus, when no one is seeking to build their own kingdom but all serve each other, and when we all realize that all of us are members of the same body, all related to each other, all needing each other.

Remember the importance of these principles. Seek to be complete in your faith. Be committed to becoming mature. Seek to encourage and comfort others. And make it your goal to live in harmony and peace. If you do these things, the Bible promises that the God of love and peace will be with you.
