Parents and Their Children

Like parents in all generations, Job was concerned about his children. He might have been the most outstanding citizen of his time, but nothing was as important to him as his children. As they became adults, Job remained concerned, particularly about their habit of gathering together “to eat and drink” and feast for days. Day after day, he rose early and prayed for them.

The relationship between parents and children is a constant theme throughout the Bible. As children age, they seek to become independent. Yet, as Job discovered, parents have an emotional attachment to their children throughout their lives.

The Bible provides many instructions to guide parents. But children also are encouraged to understand why parents remain important in their lives…even after they become adults.

Proverbs tells us there are penalties for those who curse their father, but “a man who loves wisdom makes his father glad” (Proverbs 29:3). Children are to listen to their parents (Proverbs 4:1-3).

They are to remember the impact they have on their parents (Proverbs 10:1). There are specific rewards for those with good attitudes toward their parents: “Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be prolonged in the land which the LORD your God gives you” (Exodus 20:12).

Are you a parent? Pray for your children. Seek to be a good example. Show them compassion and concern. If you have parents, regardless of your age, treat them with respect. Honor them. Listen to them. Seek to bring them joy.
