Our Will or His

Our Will or His?

Summarizing Jesus’ life, the Bible quotes Psalm 40, “I have come to do your will” (Hebrews 10:7). This goal clarified everything. How did Jesus make decisions? Simply by learning the Father’s will and then doing it.

Yet Jesus still had feelings. In His flesh, there were times when He didn’t want to do what the Father asked. This was clear in the garden the night before He was crucified. He knew what was ahead – mockery, verbal assaults, the pain and agony of the cross, and death itself.

Not wanting to go through these things in His flesh, He did not remain silent but asked the Father for relief. As He emerged from that time of intense prayer, He was sure about the Father’s will. Jesus did not resist or hesitate. He might have cried out or even lobbied for a different course of action, but instead, He was ready to obey.

Jesus left us with an example. We are called to stay in tune with the Father and fill our minds and hearts with His Word, put it into practice, and be guided by His principles. But we also are called to seek the Father, ask questions, pray for clarity and guidance, seek His will, and be sensitive to the leading of the Spirit.

You can be honest with the Father and share your feelings and concerns. But always be ready to do His will and trust Him.
