Our Model

It was a massive composition that stretched musical boundaries. The results were so unexpected that some listeners were confused. Others were overwhelmed.

In writing A Hero’s Life in 1898, Richard Strauss created a massive tribute to the idea of the hero. Employing a huge orchestra, his composition was grand. The sound was designed to use the symbolism of music to describe a hero’s moments of victory and his tranquility at home, as well as his achievements and response to his admirers.

What made this more memorable was that many claimed Strauss had written about himself as the hero. (He wrote several other compositions with autobiographical features.) But not everyone appreciated these apparent motives. At the work’s premiere, one critic called it “a monstrous act of egotism.”

Strauss was not the first artist to focus on himself. History is filled with examples of all manner of people who thought primarily about themselves or advancing their own reputation.

Believers are reminded that God hates pride (Proverbs 8:13) and that our Savior was the model of humility. He “gave up his divine privileges” and became human. Earthly kings may be arrogant, but Jesus is “humble and gentle,” offering refuge for all who come to Him (Matthew 11:29).

Make sure Jesus is your model and hero. Like Him, seek to embrace humility, serve God with your life, and always give Him the glory.
