Our Humble King

“Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation…coming in the likeness of men.”—Philippians 2:5–7

As a conquering hero, Julius Caesar galvanized the Roman community, particularly after leading his armies to victory in battles in Spain. Returning to Rome in 45 BC, he was honored with the right to wear a special robe and crown. An ivory statue of his likeness was ordered to be carried at religious processions. A special statue was placed in a temple with the inscription To the Invincible God.

Many revered Caesar, but he alienated others. And on March 15, 44 BC, he was assassinated. But his death only accelerated the deification process. In January 42 BC, he was named Divine Julius by the Roman Senate, officially confirming his status as a god. Eager to follow in these footsteps, his adopted son Octavian (Caesar Augustus) began calling himself the son of a god.

Jesus was quite unlike these men! They clamored to be treated like gods. But Jesus, who was God, humbled Himself and became like an ordinary person. He encouraged us to realize that we can approach Him anytime just as we are. He called us to realize He was “gentle and lowly in heart” (Matthew 11:29).

Remember that you serve the risen Savior. He is the same Man who was born in a stable and spent His life in humility and service, died on a cruel cross, but now reigns. Worship Him. Follow His example; seek to be a person of humility.
