Open Thou Mine Eyes

“Open thou mine eyes, that I may behold wondrous things out of thy law.” Psalm 119:18 KJV

Clara Scott was a passionate Believer and a skilled musician. Born in Elk Grove, Illinois, on this day in 1841, she became the first woman to publish a collection of anthems, and taught music in the Ladies’ Seminary at Lyons, Iowa.

In one of her best known hymns, Clara was inspired by the psalmist who recognized that God had many “wondrous things” to reveal to those who would seek Him. She wrote, “Open my eyes, that I may see glimpses of truth Thou hast for me; place in my hands the wonderful key that shall unclasp and set me free.”

She prayed that God would open her ears that she would hear more clearly His “voices of truth.” She knew when she heard that truth, then “everything false will disappear.” She prayed that God would open her mouth that she could share His love with others.

She realized how easily we can be content with just “enough” insight. But she had learned that God is ready to reveal greater depths to those who seek Him. While we are totally dependent on Him for these life-changing revelations, we need to make ourselves available. She prayed, “Silently now I wait for Thee, ready my God, Thy will to see, open my eyes, illumine me, Spirit divine!”

Many people seem content with what seems obvious. With the first levels of understanding. But the Bible makes clear that there are greater depths to be revealed. That God can change us in new and deeper ways.

In your life, don’t be content with a superficial relationship with God. Spend quality time with Him. Wait on Him. Seek Him. Be sensitive to His Spirit. Pray that He would open your eyes that you might have more impact, and be drawn closer to Him.

Prayer: Father, open my eyes and ears so I may know You better. Open my mouth that I might share with others. Change me. Use me to bring Your Kingdom to this world. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
