Obstacles or Opportunities

The story is told of a manufacturer who sent two representatives to a region where most people did not wear shoes. One reported that the situation was “hopeless.” Why? Because “No one wears shoes here.”

But the other scout had a completely different response. He wrote, “Glorious business opportunity!” Why? Because “everyone here needs shoes.”

These two people saw the same situation. However, one saw impossible problems, while the other saw amazing potential. One was filled with doubt; the other with hope.

This story illustrates how our attitudes can completely change the way we look at life. Those with a negative attitude see difficulties and expect defeat and failure. Yet it is possible to look at these same problems and see opportunities instead.

The Bible tells of a similar scouting expedition. When Moses sent 12 men to explore the Promised Land, some felt the giants were too big and the challenges were too great. But two men had faith to see the possibilities. They urged, “Let us go up at once and take possession, for we are well able to overcome it.”

Jesus described these kinds of problems as “mountains.” From our human vantage point, there may not seem to be answers or hope. But Jesus urged us to have faith! He said, “Whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be taken up and cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that what he says is going to happen, it will be granted him” (Mark 11:23 NASB).

No matter how big the obstacle seems, we are to have faith in God. With His help, we can defeat any giant.

As you think about the challenges in your life, remember that all things are possible with God. Commit your needs to Him. Speak His Word, and declare His promises to be true for you. Speak to your mountains, believing God for answers. Trust Him for miracles!
