Nothing Covered Up

According to any criteria, Igor Stravinsky was one of the most important musicians in history. Many consider him the 20th century’s greatest composer. Yet recent discoveries have revealed how Stravinsky (born in Russia in 1882) himself enhanced his own reputation by manipulating his image and even overstating his unique contributions.

This pattern emerges from studying the origins of his composition, “The Rite of Spring,” the revolutionary work that catapulted Stravinsky to worldwide attention. Stravinsky famously claimed that “The Rite of Spring” was inspired by one of his dreams. But recent discoveries have revealed that this work actually was the inspiration of artist and archeologist Nicholas Roerich. But Stravinsky edited out Roerich’s contribution, taking all the credit.

Recent biographies have revealed other examples of how Stravinsky organized information to encourage the myth of his genius, and how, when necessary, he manipulated or ignored contrary facts. While Stravinsky could have gotten away with these actions during his lifetime, eventually the full story has emerged.

The Bible makes clear that the truth always emerges eventually about all of us, for God knows everything about our lives. We never can fool Him. As Jesus said, “There is nothing covered up that will not be revealed, and hidden that will not be known.'”

Jesus specifically addressed these truths in relationship to the hypocrisy of the Pharisees, who pretended to be one thing while actually being something different. But God knew the truth.

In your life, remember that God knows the truth about you. Be honest with Him. Let Him examine your life, and purify your heart and mind. Seek to be honest in your relationship with others and always on guard against hypocrisy.
