Not Knowing How to Pray

What do we do when we don’t know how to pray? Or what to pray for?

There may be many experiences that lead to these feelings. Moments when our mind may be filled with doubt or confusion, when we feel stretched or perplexed, when the situations we face may not make sense. These moments reveal our human weaknesses.

These are times when we can turn to the Spirit. This truly is a gift from God. It’s a dimension to life that unbelievers never could understand. The amazing promise is that the Spirit will make intercession for us.

The Bible is filled with directions about prayer. We are to “pray at all times in the Spirit” (Ephesians 6:18 NASB). We are to “pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17). As Jesus taught, we should pray “at all times” and “not lose heart” (Luke 18:1 NASB). We ought to be confident that “all things for which you pray and ask, believe that you have received them, and they will be granted you” (Mark 11:24 NASB).

But for those moments when you don’t know how to pray, remember that God has given you the Spirit. As you have needs or face problems, when you don’t know what to do or what to pray for, turn to the Spirit. The Bible encourages you to pray in the Spirit, to depend on the Spirit, and to rely on the Spirit’s power. Do it today!
