My Song in the Night

Inspiration MinistriesBy Inspiration Ministries2 Minutes

It is night and you are alone. No matter how hard you try, your mind keeps racing, spinning with thoughts about the day. Mulling over words spoken. Struggling to find answers to problems. Wondering what to do next. Hoping to rest, but, instead, feeling worries intensifying.

Asaph, the writer of many Psalms, had such a moment.

We feel his emotions as he admitted, “In the night my hand was stretched out without weariness.” He was desperate as his soul “refused to be comforted.” He tried to find peace by remembering “the days of old” and “the years of long ago.” Yet he was “so troubled that

I cannot speak.”

As he struggled, he “sought the Lord.” In these moments he remembered his “song in the night.” These were past moments when he had called out to God. When he remembered His faithfulness, and His promises.

He remembered that God “works wonders.” How by His power He redeemed His people, saving them when they were drowning in deep waters. When they needed protection and guidance, He led them “like a flock.” Asaph’s conclusion? “What god is great like our God?”

These were moments that inspired an unknown writer from America’s history to write a simple song called, “My Song in the Night.” His story echoed that of Asaph. In gentle words spoken directly from his soul, he wrote, “O Jesus my Savior, my song in the night, come to us with Thy tender love, my soul’s delight.”

In those moments, whether at night or day, he knew that he could call to Jesus in the midst of affliction and find comfort. Even if he felt alone, he didn’t need to wander or feel like an alien. Even in a desert, He could see His face.

Do you face moments like this in your life? Turn to Jesus.
