More About Jesus

It was a potentially devastating moment. A young teacher with a bright future, Eliza Hewitt suffered a severe spinal injury when struck by an object from a student. The injury left her somewhat crippled.

The impact of this event was so serious that she had to stop teaching in the public school system. But Eliza, a passionate Believer, found that her injury gave her more time to serve God.

As she was studying the Bible in 1887, when she was 36, Eliza became overwhelmed by the promises of God and how these promises had been fulfilled in Jesus. Excitement grew with each new discovery. She became even more passionate about knowing Jesus, from the Bible and through her personal prayer life.

She expressed her convictions in a poem called “More About Jesus,” writing “More about Jesus would I know, more of His grace to others show; more of His saving fullness see, more of His love who died for me.”

Eliza yearned to see “more of His saving fullness” and “more of His love who died for me.” She wanted to learn more about discerning “His holy will.” She called on God’s Spirit to be her teacher and show “the things of Christ to me.”

In addition to knowing more about Jesus through studying His Word, she wrote of “holding communion with my Lord; hearing His voice in every line, making each faithful saying mine.”

As she saw the Lord reigning supreme, she longed to know about Jesus “on His throne, riches in glory all His own.” As she increased in knowledge, she was convinced of “His kingdom’s sure increase” and how He would come again, the Prince of Peace.

In your life, seek to know more about Jesus. Let Him reveal Himself to You and change you in new and powerful ways.
