Mighty Power

Isaac Watts struggled with frail health throughout much of his life. But, in his frailty, he recognized the greatness of God’s power. That he could depend on Him and gain strength from Him.

Born in England on this day in 1674, Watts also had a lifelong love for children. In 1715 Watts wrote a book of songs especially for young people, considered one of the first hymnals of its kind written exclusively for children.

One of those hymns told about the way in which God’s power was displayed throughout creation. It was a message he felt was important, particularly for young Believers.

He wrote, “I sing the mighty power of God, that made the mountains rise, that spread the flowing seas abroad, and built the lofty skies.”

Watts wrote about singing “the wisdom that ordained the sun to rule the day; the moon shines full at God’s command, and all the stars obey.” He wrote how God “formed the creatures through the Word,” and displayed His wonders wherever we turn.

Watts realized that there was not a plant or flower that did not make His glories known. He saw that all of us merely borrow life from God and that everything “is ever in Thy care; and everywhere that we can be, Thou, God art present there.”

Today, look around you. Don’t focus on your problems, but think about the many ways He reveals His power and glory. Now, realize that you can trust Him. He can provide answers to every question, and He can direct your steps. He can perform miracles and meet your needs.

Don’t allow your heart to be filled with doubt or despair. Sing the mighty power of God.
